Somatic Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is a holistic approach to healing that combines the principles and practices of yoga with modern therapeutic techniques. It’s based on the idea that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected, and aims to promote overall health and well-being by addressing physical, mental, and emotional issues.

In yoga therapy, I work with individuals to create personalized programs tailored to their specific needs and goals. These programs typically include a combination of yoga postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness practices.

The therapeutic benefits of yoga come from its ability to enhance self-awareness, reduce stress, improve flexibility, strength, and balance, as well as promote relaxation and a sense of inner peace. By practicing yoga regularly under the guidance of a qualified therapist, individuals can experience relief from various health conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other stress-related disorders.

Yoga therapy sessions may be conducted one-on-one or in group settings, and they often involve an initial assessment to understand the client’s needs and goals. The therapist then designs a customized practice that addresses those specific concerns, providing guidance and support along the way.

Overall, yoga therapy offers a gentle yet powerful approach to healing that empowers individuals to take an active role in their own well-being, fostering a deeper connection between the body, mind, and spirit.

The approach I use is one that brings in both the body and the mind, bringing in both evidence based therapy and also bringing in holistic approaches. A somatic therapy approach uses movement, breathing techniques and mindfulness to help you be present with your body again. A body centered approach helps you to process your trauma in a way that involves more than just talking, but learning to be present and explore the somatic sensations that will arise with curiosity.

Yoga studies have shown to significantly reduce PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms. It brings in the concept of body awareness and opening yourself to the transitory nature of one’s momentary experience in a way that feels safe. We’ll address finding safety in your body and learn to regulate and tolerate sensations and emotions. You’ll gain resiliency through this tools and I collaborate with you as a therapist to be able to use these tools on your own at home so you can gain more confidence outside of therapy. These are tools that will transform your life, heal your body and mind holistically.

Ceremony and Circles

Ceremonies, a form of sacred space, have been around for thousands of years as a way to connect, transform and heal individuals and communities. Entering into a ceremony is entering into a sacred space. If you have never been to a ceremony this is a way to enter into with support. Ceremonies can be done individually or in a larger group setting.

Creating sacred space.

Engaging in this way is healing on many levels. It fills our hearts, renews our spirits, relaxes our bodies, and allows us to rest our minds. Participating in ceremony nourishes our spirits and gives us renewed energy to move forward feeling more centered and grounded in our personal truth.

We can create big ceremonies of celebration to mark life events, ceremonies to honor times of transition, ceremonies of healing, and ceremonies of blessing a space. Or we can simply light a candle and create a personal ceremony of healing, release, blessing, etc.

Energy Healing

Reiki, energy healing is also an ancient form of healing that has been passed down through healing practitioners in communities. It is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century.

The positive benefits of reiki can enhance your overall well-being. Researchers in a small 2016 study found that reiki was helpful in improving the quality of life for women with cancer. Women who had reiki showed improvements to their sleep patterns, self-confidence, and depression levels. They noted a sense of calm, inner peace, and relaxation.

Reiki may help to improve your mood by relieving anxiety and depression. According to results from a 2011 study, people who had reiki felt greater mood benefits compared to people who didn’t have reiki. The study participants who had six 30-minute sessions over a period of two to eight weeks showed improvements in their mood.

Come back to your inner peace.

Awaken and cleanse your body, mind, and spirit as we step into the beauty of a new season. Spring is a time to shed the darker, sometimes heavy energy accumulated during winter, and for gradually “lightening up.”

In this retreat, we’ll focus on invigorating the body’s detoxification processes and bringing in warmth to nurture seeds of renewal. Together we’ll explore practices to help set a clear intention for the coming season, to support release where it is needed, and offer space for healing and abundance. What areas of your life would you like to nurture? What seeds of intention or new beginnings are you ready to plant for the coming season?
